Lees Valley

Another excellent camping trip on the Groms.

Day 1 – CHCh to Wooded Gully – 250 km

Took a leisurely ride up to  Lake Coleridge. The wind was howling and the weather which was supposed to be sunny, wasn’t. But the sun came out eventually. We spent a bit oof time exploring  around Coleridge, before backtracking and taking the road past lake Lyndon, Springfiel and on to Oxford for fuel. We camped at wooded Gully campsite just past Oxford.

  • Not sure how long on the road – probably from around 8am to 4 or 5pm.
  • Excellent little tucked away camping spot in the forest
  • Fuel consumption goes waaay up when riding in heavy wind

Day 2 – Lees Valley to Home – 141 km

Simon had his first proper oops on the gravel today. That stuff is slippery. Luckily going fairly slow, but not slow enough. It was a very hot and dusty day on the road today and we were quite glad when we were back on the tarmac.

  • 140 km
  • hot and dusty
  • lots of cyclists on the road
  • river crossing   only ankle deep so easy. When it rains  this river swells substantially and we would not get through.
  • Panniers had to be sewn up again
